Wisdom teeth are usually the last teeth to come through the gums,
in most people they erupt in the late teens or twenties. In many cases, when wisdom teeth begin to erupt, there is not enough room in the jaw for them to all emerge. Consequently, a number of complications may arise causing pain, infection, ulceration and chewing problems. These situations may lead to wisdom teeth having to be removed to either stop the consistent swellings and infections or to help protect surrounding teeth from becoming damaged by the impaction.
At Pullenvale Dental Surgery we have many years of experience in the safe removal of wisdom teeth.
In many other situations, a general dentist may often refer their patient to an oral surgeon to get the wisdom teeth taken out under general anaesthetic as there are not many general dentists able to undertake complex wisdom tooth extractions. Being referred to an oral surgeon and getting wisdom teeth removed under general anaesthetic is usually more expensive due to the private hospital fees involved and also fees for an anesthetist.
